Breaking News

Many thanks to Amy and Bobert for alerting me to breaking ornithological news. The wires are buzzing that over a year ago, bird folks spotted an ivory-billed woodpecker (thought to be long extinct) in the backlands of Arkansas. The Man and the Mad Scientists who support Him kept this sighting on the down low--arguably to protect its habitat and conduct some yet to be announced studies.
I watched the first clip Bobert sent while completely ignorant that avian history was unfolding before my very eyes. It looks like a home video of a para-military war game in Montana. I kept thinking the person in the foreground was going to shoot the poor bird.

Here's the more academic resource. It's "vintage" -- from the Little House on the Prairie days of wagon wheels stuck in mud and tin pail lunch boxes.

Hey, I'll take woodpeckers over any more news about the pope.

Boba Madness

This article in NY Times Magazine is an annoying food criticization/intellectualization of one of life's great simple pleasures.

To put a positive note on a snarky intro, I love bubble tea. We at Lunamania like lists and criteria and being opinionated. So here's the Lunamania list of tasty bubble tea. Comments are always welcome!

#1 Wonderful Foods Co. at 2110 Irving b/t 22nd and 23rd is hands down the best boba. As described in the article above, bubbles are all about texture. There's none of that creepy furry fuzz feel. On rare occassions the bubbles have been a tad on the sweet side. Nonetheless, they win first place in Lunamania because they are one of the few places that offer the sugar seizure inducing Pudding Tapioca Bubble Tea. They have over 100 tea, fruit, smoothy, coffee concoctions and you can snack on tea eggs, various beef jerky snacks, an rainbow assortment of bin candy and preserved tasties. Room for improvement = frequent buyer card.

#2 Sweetheart Cafe 319 9th street on Harrison. Oakland Chinatown's teen hang out is appropriately located on the ground floor of the Asian Resource Center building which is home to APEN, Sweat Shop Watch, Asian Immigrant Worker Advocates and Filipinos for Affirmative Action. If they made pudding bubble tea, they would be in a tie with Wonderful Foods. That said, their bubbles are consistent and they have more candy, offer popcorn chicken and something I will dub coconut coffee gel blocks--very tasty. My vote goes to their lychee bubble tea, mocha, and anything you can work the green grass jelly into.

#3 Sweetheart Cafe on Grant at Washington in San Francisco Chinatown. Earlier this month, I noticed a number of people walking around with the trademark Sweetheart cups of deliciousness. I enlisted my co-workers into some sleuthing that lead us to the newbie in town--a mere 2 blocks from our office. Joy. They made some good choices here--namely to at least offer pudding bubble tea. However, the pudding is of the egg heavy variety as opposed to the flan kind. The bubbles were good though. I'll have to go a few more times to check for consistency.

#4 The tea house most commonly known as the one next to the St Alps on 51 Mott Street in NY Chinatown. Unlike the top 3 on this vaunted list, #4 is a sit down affair with appetizers and "ambience"--or at least dim lighting. I stuck to the almond teas here and sitting down opens up the option of warm tea. Their dark teas are good, but relative to the top 3, their fruit and slushy options are quite limited. They do have one of those cool vacuum sealing machines if you order to go.

#5 St Alps in Sunset Park, Brooklyn 58th and Eighth. Like #4, this spot offers seating and a laminated menu and a relatively limited fruit based selection. Consistent bubbles and two blocks from Nonya's--who needs to trek to Manhattan? :)

Not so interesting entry...

I'm happy that the A's won, but disappointed w/the Mets. I'm reserving my vent on the Mets for another day.

Today, Rini and I hassled staffers while noting amusing photo opportunities for ourselves. My favorite would be a shot of us next to the "ten commandments/Terry Schiavo did not die in vain mobile" outside of the building. A close second is a cheezy picture of us next to the inappropriately large sign pointing to the "John Paul II Condolence Book" -- the combination of the two pictures should have the ACLU peoples up in arms.

I returned to Oakland and Chez Kochiyama in full swing. I had Eddie's incredible corned beef and partook in the requisite scotch fun. Gots to love it.

I plan to spent the weekend seeing peeps, sleeping, playing catch, taking/editting pictures for mi photoblog (see sidebar), and playing w/my neglected pets. But right now, I'm going to sleep.

Yay Julian!

I wish all my friends would join me in the blogosphere, but I'm especially excited to share that Julian is now online. Why? 1) He's one of the smartest people I know, 2) he's my dear friend, 3) he's a devoted web weenie, 4) he takes cool pictures, and 5) he loves the Bay and Brooklyn.

Check him out here (and on the sidebar) and note his tech-hip, invite-only 360.yahoo beta tester self. Kewl.

Capitol HS

I'm schlepping back and forth from Oakland to Sacramento a lot this week. We're doing a bunch of visits for a language access/parental involvement in education bill we are sponsoring. I'm new to all this, but I'm learning that "legislative advocacy" in the Capitol building can be a lot like going door-knocking in a high school. I spent time with some staffers who are supportive and engaged, but the bulk of the day was spent going door to door and making a 3 minute pitch and ask. Each office has its own clique/after-school club vibe--some are like chess club and others lean towards animal house. And you're a cool kid if you know the captain of the football team. The whole process highlights my social ineptitude. I'm always genuinely excited to run into the 5 people I know there. ok, I exaggerate...I only know 3 people.
Anyway, given that I'm the new student/tranfer, I appreciate my current and former co-workers sheparding me to my next class, saving me a seat in the cafeteria, and playing with me during recess.
Just one more trip this week...
