You have been warned

Cat Calendars are in the mail. I cannot believe the number of hours that went into that damn thing. It's proof that for the most part, "hey, that'd be funny" ideas should never be put into action. After several production glitches, the Get Shit Done Monkey took charge and yoyoyoyoyo they were done. Anyway, I hope you cat loving peoples enjoy it.

Since I never learn from my mistakes, there are several babies along the way and apparently have all sorts of time to piss away, I'm onto my next project--Lunamania alphabet book. Details to follow. Rock on.

Observations from Pride Weekend 2005

1. It is always good to sit in a park and chat with old and new friends while eating potato chips and drinking wine.
2. "Happy Pride!" remains a bizarre holiday greeting.
3. Pride is still a holiday in search of an Official Food. Thus, in Lunamania, it is not a real holiday.
4. As evidenced by the large number of pierced dykes in their bras and jockey shorts hurling themselves (willingly) down a muddy slope, there are too many white dykes in Dolores Park.
5. The average wait for a bathroom before, during and after dyke march remains 45 minutes.
6. Somehow the Asian dykes always find each other. I have yet to determine whether this is reassuring or just plain scary.
7. Despite my generally skeptical attitude, I continue to be awed by the hoards of queer women, trannies and our bio boy supporters.
8. And I'll always take: dyke march over Pride Parade brought to you by Skyy Vodka and Bank of America; doritos over fritos; harry potter over narnia; Tribe over Black Eyed Peas --wait, they aren't even in the same league; DJ Krush over DJ Clue; chocolate chip over oatmeal raisin; and finally, Lunamania over household chores and basic hygeine.

Track 5

The last couple of music posts have been mellow and hopefully not too ear-worm-ish. Well, here's the change-up.

Brought to you by the poster muppets for the gay marriage...i mean marriage equality movement and dedicated to all the queer TV icons.

No more sharing

Being the geek that I am, I do check my webstats every once in a while. Generally, this is just a routine confirmation that Lunamania maintains chart topping popularity with the comment-spammers and that no one really reads this blog. Last month though I noticed a suspicious spike in traffic. Weird...did I mention Asian lesbian porn again? Or cliff notes to Life of Pi? Or the ever popular, yet unfulfilled search request for the Magnolia Cupcake recipe? Nyet--I discovered people were downloading/viewing my picture of SBC Park. Nearly 10,000 downloads.

Of course in cyberspace, 10,000 is nothing, but it creeped me out. I sleuthed around and concluded that I don't like sharing with strangers. OK, to be fair, they aren't really strangers. I know a lot about them. They are pimply teens (I know because I saw their pictures), devoted Korn fans, car tuners with bad spoilers, and companies dedicated to designing new-old school stadiums. Call me selfish, but these folks can go take their own pictures of the ballpark. OK I admit it, despite my attempts to be cyber-groovy, the whole thing just scared me. And hey, it's not all that interesting a picture anyway.

New career paths

I spent the day discussing racial justice and movement building at a funder sponsored "convening" of "thought people" of various organizations. Grrr...I like to keep Lunamania substantively work-free. But given that so many of my peoples are at times burnt out, in need of creative outlets and love butcher paper, I feel it is my duty to always share new career possibilities such as -- "graphic recording."

Before all that there are really important matters to report. Tonight, the Mets played the A's at MacAfee Stadium for the first time in THIRTY TWO YEARS. I was there rockin' my Mets cap in a sea of A's nuts. The Mets lost, but I have to say it was a great game. Scutaro hit a 9th inning walk-off homer. Hey, I got to see an error free game from Matsui--he stole a base too. Excellent.

For those who care to know about the exciting world of "graphic recording"...
You all know that progressive workshop-y types have single-handedly sustained the butcher paper industry. Today, they took it to the next level. For reasons unknown, my packet contained an "annotated agenda" and I noticed there were instructions for "graphic recorders" to do their thing."What's taters?" asks the Smoegel/Golem in my head. I then notice two white women in matching pink sweaters haul out one of those tool box sized art kits. These were no mismatched sets of Mr. Bubbles smelly markers (I was always fond of the red and brown ones.) No, these are professional artist who use butcher paper as their medium. So they proceed to arm themselves with a fistful of angle-tip calligraphy markers and pastel charcoal chalk things. Then they start shading their letters, and drawing little caricatures of speakers next to the blurbs of their comments. It was so bizarre, but well-executed. I was unexplicably horrified. I mean people have now made entire careers out of writing on butcher paper. I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

Oh, Manohla Dargis says Batman rocks. I'm there right after I see Brangelina--drool. I have no shame.

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes

"Progressive or radical" men who always interrupt and talk over women and don't think it's sexist

Lost in space

The Paid Family Leave Act Expert Monkey was doing a workshop in LA this weekend. So I tagged along for the trip to LA. We braved the Friday evening communter mobs schlepping on Southwest Airlines from the Bay to LA. I tried to remain in good spirits by declaring it an evening of Triangle Airport Foods--pizza and doritos. I was needing a weekend away from work and more work. Thanks to the Rini, Christina and Wallabee's warm hospitality, I was able to relax for the first time in weeks. I made up for my Triangle Food dinner by eating about 40 guava pastries that Christina spent 2 hrs procuring. Al-b, I was thinking of you. We then proceeded to eat a full meal every 2 hours for the next 8 hrs or so.
Highlights of the weekend include, 3.5 hours of bangin' norebang--yes, I rhyme; playing Super Steroid Scrabble--double the tiles and the dream of the quadruple word score. Elaine sez, "Don't be greedy!" I have to agree.

Upon returning to the Bay, we went to meet William August Jasper, the newest addition to Chris and Amy's family. Unlike most Lunamania demographic reports, this is actually a human baby as opposed to a cat. Peoples, new babies are very frog-like. Call me sheltered. Accuse me of ignorance re: the miracle of life. I've never seen such a newly hatched baby. Hellllloooo! They kinda have scales and are all deflated looking. I got to hold him and all I have to say is...whoa. It's really an incredible feeling to hold something so damn tiny. I'm just happy Will came out healthy and Amy's feeling all good. Cheers peeps.

And of course Lunamania cannot be more relieved that Elaine--currently resident of Montauk, NY, finally has a cell phone battery life longer than .5 seconds. It's tough being on wrong coasts, but no cellie contact is completely unacceptable.

As I ramble, my one low-point is that my backpack is lost somewhere in Burbank Airport. I realized this morning that I forgot it in the screening process. I've called the airport multiple times today, but no one is returning my calls. Seeing as it's "unattended baggage" they probably blew it up. *sigh* It has my thermos and more importantly my new PDA.

Track 4

Music is keeping me sane right now...

Cascades of Color, Ananda Project

I first came across this song on the Everything But the Girl version of the Back to Mine chill series. Ben Watt worked his genuis and put together one of the must-have soulful and mellow house compilations of the decade. OK, so the decade isn't over yet, but I'm sure it will be on my list of decade CDs.

This song was a collaboration between Ben Watt and the Ananda Project. My two cents--if you liked this song, check out Ananda Project's Release album. And I think even if you don't like the entire album, at least Cascades of Color (which is included in Release) is worth the $15.

49ers suck

Having to respond to idiots is one of the many cons of working at a broad based "civil rights" organization. My time has been consumed by the 49ers video training video.
Several years ago, in the wake of "I don't want any faggots in the locker room" comments by running back Garrison Hearst, the 49ers agreed to implement some diversity training. Now all you Lunamania readers know 99.99% of those trainings are about as real as Suffelufegus.

But just to ensure complete inefficacy, at the end of the diversity training, the 49ers showed a "how to deal with the SF media and community" video. Filmed at City Hall, presumably with the permission of the Mayor, the video proceeds to makes fun of Asian peoples, mocks lesbian weddings, ridicules elected officials and you get the picture. Wait...aren't those the staples of Lunamania? ANYWAY.

On a more serious note, the owner, the fool who made the video, and the general counsel for the 49ers met with some community folk. Hopefully coalition of folks can remain united enough to negotiate remedies that amount to more than season tickets and a diversity training.

And with no segue whatsoever, I'm going to talk about music--keeps me on the positive. DJs Ang, Squeak and I have chatting about our latest favorites. Between the 3 of us, the current musical selections include: Be, Common. Personally, I like the intro and track 10. Common has thankfully returned from his detour to that Electric Circus land. Not a classic, but a solid album. Then there's the Kelly Clarkson album. 'nuff said. We're proud to rock diverse musical genres...
