Outrage

I generally keep this blog rant free because I do a lot of that in other spaces, but I haven't found an outlet for this particular topic of outrage--the Japanese government's refusal to be accountable for sex-slavery. It's a given that as a matter of justice and addressing past wrongs, it ranks high on the list of Egregious Acts of State Sponsored Rape and Torture. It's also frustrating because like so many international rights/reparations/social justice advocacy, I find it difficult to know what I--or anyone can do in solidarity or to directly support the work. I know, we can write letters in support of the various legislative resolutions, protest the Japanese consulate, donate to good organizations, write to our local papers...but all that feels off in some way.

I kind of felt the same way at the Gabriela solidarity event last week. I mean the government and military kill over 850 people and "disappear" so many more and I make a meager donation, eat some adobo and spend nice evening with my friends? (Just to be clear, the women of Gabriela rock--this isn't a rant about their work, just my own piddly non-participation in global solidarity movements.) I know I know, this is beginning to sound a lot like some progressive guilt trip. I'll stop. But not until I rant a bit about Japanese politicians.

Two weeks before coming to the U.S., Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe asserted there was "no evidence to prove there was coercion" of girls and women into sexual slavery by the Imperial Army of Japan during WWII. Last week, Abe was in DC and made some more ridiculous statements about Japan's sex-slave system in WWII. He acknowledged the "sacrifice" of sex slaves and offered "deep-hearted sympathies that the people who had to serve as comfort women were placed in extreme hardships." In an eerily timed decision, two days ago, Japan's Supreme Court rendered a similarly accountability evading decision that acknowledged the existence of the sex-slave system--and documents the specific enslavement and repeated rape of two 13 and 15 year old girls...but refused reparations for survivors. Thus, the Japanese government is absolved of any accountability while being shielded from future claims.

These non-acknowledgment/non-accountability statements are even more maddening than a flat out denial that sex-slave system ever existed. Talking about the experiences of women subject to sex-slaves as "sacrifices" keeps breathing life into the Imperial Army's view that such women were all subjects of the Japanese Emperor and called to service their "comrade" soldiers of the Japanese empire accordingly. The calculated elusiveness of this kind of slippery language allows elements of the Japanese government to assert that there is an"ongoing dispute" about the sex-slave system. There is no debate about whether the system existed. There are mountains of evidence that even the Japanese government acknowledges that document the sex-slave system. The only real "debate" is whether the Japanese government will be held accountable.

I promise a lighter post next time.

Four days in a row

That might be an all time record for consecutive postings. I'd like to think the increased attention to Lunamania is a product of bigger transitions in my life that have created head space for blogging; however, I suspect it's actually more the result of simply doing anything to avoid the tortuous task of churning out grant reports. It's that season again. I have two to go before the end of next week.

I'm boring myself.

I'm tired. Insert your very own witty transition thought here.

I don't have many friends who blog, but have noticed that Tony and Sunny have both incorporated Twitter into their sites. Twitter is a microblogging/social networking application. For the non-geeks, it would allows me to post short entries (140 words or less) from an IM program or via text msg.
As my dad would say, "So whats?" Exactly, so whats? Do the not so many readers of Lunamania really want/need/care to know what I'm doing every 2 hrs? NO. But I'm attracted to Twitter's forcibly short updates. 140 words is manageable from my Treo. Also, short is key since I'm often compelled to ramble on and on with nothing all that amusing to share. Anyway, be on the lookout for a twitter sidebar soon.

"Work out" consisted of 5.5 mile bike, 2 mile run and watching a re-run of the Awesome Pawsome show on Animal Planet. It documents the first year of Bengal tiger cubs raised in captivity at a zoo in Australia. Someday I'm going to touch a tiger.

Can't Forget About You, Nas

I recently got a nice remix of this track. As one review put it, "Nas, the only who has the clout and cash to clear a Nat King Cole sample." It didn't go to waste. I'm not that impressed with Chrisette Michelle's vocals, but the nostalgia is kinda nice.

900 Grayson

graysonedit.jpg

This is my new favorite brunch spot. 900 Grayson in Berkeley makes some buttery scrambled eggs with fresh herbs, crisp hash browns and an excellent chicken and waffles dish. Everything is homemade--even the blueberry jam and the portions aren't ridiculously super sized. They plan to start serving dinners in June and I'm definitely going to check them out.

Gym rat report: swim 900 meters, run 3 miles, view Star Trek Voyager and wonder what to cook for dinner.

Cherry Blossom Madness

nobuko042307.JPG
I got to finally see Nobuko's drumming skills on display at the 40th Annual Cherry Blossom Festival. That Nobuko always has such a great smile. We lined the streets and screamed like deranged fans. The Okinawan drumming group she's with was a refreshing blast of energy after a number of floats packed with Ms.Nisei/JAL Queen/random obasan accompanied by shamisen.

This Merchant's Association Beauty Pageant float was followed by a highly amusing and sharply contrasted punk, butoh, horror movie, goth inspired anti-kimono/non-geisha band.

Due to a bout of claustrophobia fueled by an hour of searching for parking, I had to flee J-town without getting to hang out with peeps. Of course, only after waiting for Jack to finish his photo shoot. I swear you cannot take him out in public gatherings without attracting at least one large random crowd of onlookers and admirers requesting a picture. It's very strange, but I suppose this is the life of a beautiful canine.

Gym log: Swim 700 meters; run 2 miles --which for the properly metric centric is 3200 meters. Entertained myself with yet another Yankees loss.

Run, Turtle, Run!

I'm happy to report that my weenie buddy Tony is blogging again. We have long shared a fascination for gadgetry of all sorts and "productivity" tips that are the electronic equivalent of walking around IKEA and imagining cutting my work hours down by keeping a tidy desk and filing system reflective of a similarly efficient brain. My life never works this way, but I keep hope alive.

Like Jen, Tony has started posting his workouts. He says it's to keep him accountable. Given my minimal gym attendance, I think I might start doing the same.

Today: Biked 5 miles and ran 3. Watched the Sox beat the Yankees (yay.)

Pretty nice jams. I'm keen on Segue o Seco from her Barulhinho Bom album.

Not your average Chinese banquet

Aside from the honey walnut prawns, 2 megatons of MSG and the small children in their culturally appropriate get ups, this saturday night was not your average Chinese banquet. I spun, ate and had fun watching a bunch of women shake their boot-ays at APIQWTC's 20th annual lunar new year banquet. As snarky as I can be about large identity-based gatherings, it was kind of nice to be at a Chinese banquet that wasn't a Chinese banquet---if that makes any sense.

After the family fun, the party moved to Kim's Backyard--a local Raiders bar owned and operated by Kim, a Korean American woman who first welcomes every customer with a smile, then a hand shake, and as the evening wears on she roams the floor giving bear hugs and pawing women in a way that could invite a sexual harassment suit if it took place at a workplace.
But hey, she makes a mean BBQ in here non-backyard and Miho and Aki made sure the liquor, hospitality and food were flowing. If that karaoke machine would work, it'd be a regular hang out.

Pictures from the banquet live here.

The Lunamania Reader

I might be co-teaching a course on Asian Americans and Immigration or some such thing next semester. To that end, I should be devoting some brain space to a syllabus and figuring out what exactly will engage impressionable minds. But that list would not be nearly as fun as the following reads I'm amusing myself with:

Wii locator

Contrary to popular belief and photo documentation, I am not the leading proponent of the Wii or other games in this household...but clearly have no objections.

The Megacity: Decoding the Chaos of LagosI'm having a love-love relationship with my New Yorker subscription. I want to be Hendrik Hertzberg. Actually, I don't want to live in D.C. So I'd rather be George Packer. Can someone make that happen please?

Baseball season has begunand there are a number of my peoples to read up on. For the non-Japanese reading, here's an English site.

Reporting back from the OC

The Monkey and I made a quick jaunt down to the Southland last weekend. The kiddies were all over the place, the adults exhausted and the cat...oh the poor cat.

cat-and-kid.jpg

Tara and Michi helped us recuperate with a lovely yakiniku feast at Anjin. This place ROCKS. It's Japanese style Korean bbq and the quality of the meat is world class. The Kobe beef plate was the perfect buttery marble. Yes, Kobe beef.

We brushed off our blissful, beef induced food comas with some quick fire fighting action in Tara and Michi's kitchen. Nothing like a flaming oven to get the blood pumping. The resulting dessert was scrumptious and did confirm my suspicion that Tara and Speed continue to share their desserts...

The face of a panda killer?

Amidst a media frenzy and calls by animal rights activists that he should have been put to sleep, Knut, the celebrity polar bear faces accusations of panda-cide...
