Happy birthday Legolas. I mean lego blocks

Last year, I spent an afternoon with 4 other adults, a second grader, about 20 lego people and roughly 800 lego pieces. Following the prompts of the second grader (I swear!) we built a pretty awesome leather bar. Standing two stories tall, it boasted 2 separate dance floors for an expansive 4 square inches of dancing–enough for 2 lego people! It also housed a full bar tended by a mustacioed leather daddy lego head, a disco ball and a special biker parking lot. It put the Stud to shame. Spurred by an online Lego contest, the youngest of the bunch–now a spunky 3rd grader with expanded motor skills–invited us over for another play date. While his parents encouraged the leather bar entry, I think his chances are better with the much tamer animal hospital we put together yesterday. I found my a.d.d self captivated for 2 solid hours and this afternoon, I was seriously tempted to go buy some legos for myself. The last time I saw my brother, we marveled at the recently issued 5000!! piece Millenium Falcon kit. The manual alone is 4 lbs. I even contemplated how I would organize my legos (I’m ok with mixing from kits, but special pieces–you know what I mean–would go into a separate box for easy access.) omg, I’m such a dork.
I have a soft spot for legos because they marked the beginning of a lifelong fascination with tinkering and ordering my little brother around. I imagine playing with legos wasn’t all that fun for him since I tasked him with fishing out that one very particular piece to complete my masterpiece. From legos, I moved on to rubber band guns with my dad, then model and radio controlled cars with my brother. Now that I’m all grown up, I’m not ashamed to admit I have a couple of model car kits tucked away and waiting to be built…Although my tinkering drive is now directed towards this blog and productivity tips gleaned from Lifehacker.
Today I noticed The Universe was affirming my love of legos. The google icon was in lego blocks. It’s the 50th anniversary! It’s a sign that I must go buy some legos…or get myself invited to more play dates with 3rd graders.
Lydia’s Funeral Video

The stand-up comic, playwrite, art director, Vespa riding, bumper-less car driving and always entertaining Samantha Chanse has a new solo show. Despite the title, it’s not a screening of a video, but live performance. Furthermore, although it is a one woman show by a rad woman of color, I’m told by secret sourcesthat it is refreshingly non-navel gazing and most definitely funny. I’ll be there for sure. More info below and click the flyer for links to ticket purchases.

The not-so-distant future. An obsession with the apocalypse. A dream-invading embryo. And four weeks to shoot a video, do some standup comedy, and terminate a pregnancy.
Holy shit.
