Non-verbal

My temporary hiatus from cubicle life freed me from conference calls, meetings and most verbal communication. There are days when I wonder about the mental health consequences of talking to my animals more than humans. Then I remember the nonsense of multi-hour conference calls. Those are weeks and years of my life that I will never…get…back.I’m beginning to feel that not having so much of my energy consumed by verbalizing is good for me. And somehow that is all related to re-designing Photoweenie. You know, photographs as a non-verbal form of communications or something like that. The critiques in my photo class are also contributing to all of this by providing some discipline to letting the work speak for itself. It feels more than slightly pretentious to call the products of my photoweenie-dom “work”, but there’s something liberating about getting feedback from other weenies and curbing my impulse to explain whatever element of each shot. In the process, my classmates have shown me things in my pictures that I never saw. A long winded way of saying my verbal self may be in hibernating now, but I am enjoying my camera.
I’m trying to post everyday so check it out. My favorite design upgrade is the ability to view the site against both a light and dark background. Pretty nifty. Feedback is always welcome.

A four alarm fire left nearly 60 people homeless and destroyed the offices of Caminos, an organization dedicated to bridging the digital divide. Caminos provides computer software and repair courses and employment assistance to low-income Latinas in San Francisco’s Mission district. It’s an important way to ensure that women of color are not left behind in the “tech boom” here in the Bay Area.My friend, Laura Valdez, is the Executive Director and has asked me to make a pitch for support. They need to replace all of their equipment including 40 computers, server, printers, copier and all their office furniture. Caminos will also have to find temporary office space to run their computer training courses.
Please consider making a donation at Caminos SF
Nothing in particular

Clearly, I exhausted my blogging quota after the last two long-ish posts. There’s been much afoot in my non-virtual life to keep me occupied the last few weeks. Many friends visiting from all over, never ending writing projects that are beginning to feel like pulling (my own) teeth, hours of neurotic navel gazing as I contemplate taking on more traditional legal work, and sadly, watching over a very sick Jack, our 15 yr old dog. The last point is too overwhelming to write about so I won’t and then maybe he’ll return to his jaunty and dapper self tomorrow. After a week of venting with almost every public interest lawyer in my age range about our severe underpaidededness–my writing has become so lazy that I now make up words instead of taking the 2 seconds to restructure the sentence or think of the proper word, I decided to take a part time job at the local legal aid. “Local” makes it sound small, but it’s staffed with over 50 attorneys covering the entire Bay Area so I suppose “regional” is the more appropriate term. So I’ll be sticking it to The Man or whatever 3 days a week and selling my services to organizations who have work to spare the other 2. Toss the stuff you don’t want to do my way.
On a cheerier note, it’s just over 2 weeks till the Met’s season opener and 1 month until the release of Mariah’s new album.
