Heartbreak x2

Sad Met FanSports fandom is completely irrational. I didn’t grow up in Queens, I wasn’t even born in the amazin’ year of 1969. In 1986, I was rooting for the Yomiuri Giants and sneaking beers at Seibu Lions games. For the non-Mets inclined, those are the last two years the Mets won the World Series. I like underdogs and the Mets have the second largest payroll in major league baseball. My various US metro abodes could have me a Giants, Phillies or die-hard A’s fan, but for whatever reason, I’ve come to love, yes, Love the Mets.

Today, for the second season in a row, my team loses to the Marlins (damn fishies!!) on the last day of the regular season and fail to make the playoffs. Last season, the Mets were not so lovable losers when they frittered away a 7 game lead with 17 to go. This year, injuries and spectacular managerial kung-fu in the bullpen made me more more sympathetic than outraged–but no less heartbroken.

So I’m deflated, disappointed, but for no explicable reason…looking forward to spring training. Gots to believe.

Best Korean Dessert to Come in an Individually Wrapped Foil Packet Award

≡ Category: Semi-daily thoughts |Comments Off

Lest you think this blog lives in the stratosphere of supermodels and momentous political events…let me bring some pre-Friday joy by announcing the winner of the Best Korean Dessert to Come in an Individually Wrapped Foil Packet Award. Congratulations to…The Choco Pie! The key to deliciousness is the bouncy resistance offered by the marshmallow filling as you break through the always sort of dry (maybe stale) crumbly layer of “cake.”

Clearly, the question on everyone’s mind now is, “what’s the Best Korean Dessert to Stamped with an Image of a Marsupial?” Hands down, those would be Koala’s March–the original chocolate version.

These awards were inspired by the brother’s obsession with these two snacks and a lifetime of comparative snacking. Your favorite processed dessert item?

My “I hate prop 8!” rant…and request for $$$

On November 5th, Californians will once again wield our wacky right to legislate via ballot initiative. In past posts, I’ve urged friends to vote one way or another on various initiatives. Today, I am asking you to take a big step and Give Money. If you read no more, go here and give: www.noonprop8.org And If you’ve already given, volunteered or pledged your NO vote, drop a comment to let me and other residents of Lunamania that We Are Not Alone…uh, oh…ear worm.

If you’re still reading, let me tell you why I just gave. I, no big fan of marriage, put aside my personal views because this initiative has nothing to do with marriage and the litany of rights, responsibilities and free gifts that come with it. It comes down to the mundane things het folks take for granted. Things like knowing that if I land on my head while executing one of my spectacular displays of snowboarding clumsiness, Joannie can take me to the emergency room and make important decisions about my medical care. Note, if I’m on the California side of Tahoe my life decisions rest with Joannie, but the Nevada side? Not so clear.

Prop 8 comes on the heels of a momentous California Supreme Court decision that made it illegal to discriminate based on sexual orientation in all realms, not just marriage. That decision was a ringing endorsement of the simple notion that each person should be treated with dignity and respect. Prop. 8 is exactly the opposite. Prop. 8 is not only a direct, mean and ugly assault on queer communities, it’s a gross appeal to the basest political strategy of fear mongering and exclusion. Sound familiar? It should because it’s from the same playbook that led McCentury to pander to the wing-nut base and select that Tina Fey look alike as his running mate. I refuse to print that moose killer’s name and give her any more airtime in the blogosphere.

I’m asking you not just to vote, but give of your hard earned dollars because in politics—especially ballot initiatives, money is what prevails. The other side has raised an alarming amount of money. $4 million in the last 14 days alone. It’s coming in from the Knights of Columbus, Focus on the Family and haters across the country. They are giving because they know that this is the tipping point. If they win here, it’s a national mandate.

The polls show that we have a precarious single digit lead. With all the adrenalin flowing to the wing-nut base, I fully expect that lead to shrink and then disappear entirely—unless we raise more money. So, go give. Tell your friends and family to vote No on 8 and then volunteer for a phonebank or two. More info here: www.noon8.org
