Terrific article Luna. I feel much the same way and think the blame game is just a visceral reaction to the pain and shock. I always try to reference my own white family when I feel the urge to blame because I know with almost certainty that if I were not gay, my family would still be extremely homophobic and racist and would vote that way too. Only by my coming out did they see the error in their judgment and even then it was a process for them to get to where they are today. I really think that for a lot of people that hold these discriminatory beliefs there is no hope until they are confronted with someone in their own family to change their minds and even then it isn’t a guarantee - since you like me, likely know people kicked out of their own homes by their “god loving hetero parents.” I think you really articulated the crux of the issue which is religion - 84% of people of all races that regularly attend church voted ‘yes.”
