Queered My Census

Since The Monkey does arrive on April 1st, I had no qualms about declaring an “unmarried partner” as “Person 2″ on my Census response. That said, it’s wick-wack that being counted as a queer person is intrinsically tied to my “marriage/partnership.”. Hi, being Queer is about recognizing a broader non-heteronormative community. Really.
Which all reminded me that 10 years ago, I contemplated (and honestly, I don’t remember what I decided to do…), registering Tamu as my non-married partner to mitigate the under-counting of queers.

After a day of wrangling with my varied and multiple anxieties, writer’s block, and homesicknessssseesss, I got home and retrieved my mail (real mail, not email) and pulled out this
envelope full of goodness. In an age of third person status updates and 140 character tidbits, this pen to paper package was the most delightful missive ever. Thank you so very much ewee.

Seeing my house all boxed up, bittersweet send-off parties, and the impending arrival of The Monkey jolted me from my denial that I am Actually Leaving Oakland. Somehow, as long as The Monkey was out there, I could vicariously soak the laughter and fun of our peoples in the Bay and pretend this New York thing was one extended business trip. sigh…
When Tamu landed for phase I of bi-coastal Lunamania, he spent the first month hiding under the covers. He’s now out and about doing tremendously useful things like sleeping on the couch, sleeping in the hallway, sleeping in the closet, and pooping in the litterbox. I will look to Tamu as a model of smooth adjustment, but for now, I need to be under the covers.
