I’ve declared Gaithersburg, MD my new decompression chamber. Elaine and I drove down with the Bonkies on Saturday and between 4 adults and 2 babies there’s been a lot of lolling about, watching men’s tennis–Bob swears Milos Raonic is the new Pete Sampras, eating delicious home cooked meals, and reaping the benefits of new immigrant enclaves in Gaithersburg, i.e. tasty restaurants.
All that will be documented next month. Click here for January’s Bonklet photolog!
RIP Hamachi

I am sad to share the news that Hamachi, aka Hama-pee, Mach, has left us. As you know, Mach ruled the house with her projectile pee, snarky gaze and ability to induce heightened feline allergies. A cat of remarkable creativity, she continued to surprise us with her ability to find the most innovative places to relieve herself.
Mach stopped eating and lost control of her hind quarters on Thursday. Although she had rallied a couple of times in the last year, this time felt different. I recalled the lessons that Jack-Jack taught me–that prolonging a life of pain can be a selfish act and that the animals we love have no choice but to trust us to make the best choices for them–especially in times of distress. Hamachi lived a comfortable, luxurious, and very long life of nearly 18 years. She is now no doubt assessing her new surroundings for pee-ability and snuggling with her loved ones.
Every pet I’ve cared for has taught me both big and small things. Mach was a fighter and diva, but she was at heart a sweet lap cat. It took over 15 years for Hamachi to reveal her snuggly nature. All this after making her name as a pee terrorist–it was a reminder that everyone is capable of change. On the smaller front, Hama’s incessant urinary adventures prompted me to learn every cat lady move in the book. You know the Cat Lady in your neighborhood or office? I absolutely out Cat Lady her. You can put money on it. Wait…I sense a money making venture here…
Thanks to everyone who cat sat, mopped cat pee, laughed and cried through the multiple cat appeasement strategies. Good times, good times.
I’m away from most of my photos now, but here are a few Hamachi pics.
much love, long purrs and furry tails to you.
Black bean soup
≡ Category: Semi-daily thoughts, stuff i cooked | ≅ 3 Comments
‘Twas a snow day and it felt right to have something warm on the stove all day. I poked in the fridge and discovered chicken asses (in more polite company, know as “backs”), carrots, celery, and onions. I simmered them down to make chicken stock and somehow ended up with chicken soup. But I don’t really like chicken soup. This led to poking in the pantry and thinking…I do like black bean soup! So, if you want to clear out your fridge and pantry, here’s a recipe for you.Fridge Excavating Black Bean Soup
2 cans of black beans–drained not rinsed
Half a head of garlic –chopped
1 large onion diced
A touch of bacon, sausage, or anything that exudes lard when heated
2.5 cups chicken stock
1.5 cups of some form of tomato item — I had some salsa in the fridge, but canned tomatoes or diced fresh tomatoes seasoned to your liking would be good too
A couple of swirls of ketchup
2 tablespoons of Worschestire sauce –ok, I don’t actually measure anything, but this seems like a sound estimate
chili powder, ground cumin, salt and pepper to taste (add before/as you cook)
Mess ‘o fresh cilantro
1. Brown the cured animal items.
2. Add garlic for a minute, then onions until translucent
3. Add tomato item of choice
4. Now it’s time for Ye Chicken Stock and then the spices and salt
5. Stir on medium-high heat for 5-7 minutes
6. Add beans, turn to high heat and bring to boil. Then lower to simmer and cook at least 10 min.
7. Taste and do what you have to do.
8. Serve and garnish with cilantro
I added some kale to the mix-about 20 minutes before serving. Nice dark leafy green touch.
It was tasty and made me declare 2011 the Winter ‘o Soups.
